Red light therapy delivers safe, concentrated wavelengths of natural light to your skin and cells. These red and near infrared wavelengths of light stimulate those cells and reduce oxidative stress, so your body is able to make more usable energy to power itself. This increases function, speeds healing, and lowers inflammation & pain.
Red light therapy usually takes the form of a face mask, light panel, or wand equipped with LED lights, which you place near your skin to let your cells “absorb” the light. “Red light therapy is theorized to work on the mitochondria of our cell, simply put. This gives the cells of the body more energy, allowing other cells to function with maximum productivity. For the skin, this includes skin restoration and repair which can help increase new cell growth and intensify the restoration process.”
(RLT) is a treatment that may help skin, muscle tissue, and other parts of your body heal. It exposes you to low levels of red or near-infrared light. Infrared light is a type of energy your eyes can’t see, but your body can feel as heat. Red light is similar to infrared, but you can see it.
With red light therapy, you expose your skin to a lamp, device, or laser with a red light. A part of your cells called mitochondria, sometimes called the “power generators” of your cells, soak it up and make more energy. Some experts think this helps cells repair themselves and become healthier. This spurs healing in skin and muscle tissue.
Red light therapy uses very low levels of heat and doesn’t hurt or burn the skin. It’s not the same type of light used in tanning booths, and it doesn’t expose your skin to damaging UV rays.
Red Light Therapy Benefits
Red light therapy benefits may include the following, according to experts:
- Reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It benefits elastin and collagen in the skin causing the skin to feel smoother, more toned, and also appear less wrinkled
- Increase circulation
- Decrease inflammation
- Addresses acne. Red light can also can decrease redness and help acne marks to fade faster.
- Help with hyperpigmentation and psoriasis.
- May help with hair loss. Red light therapy can increase hair growth and density.
LED light therapy isn’t just limited to red light, either; various wavelengths can have varying effects on your body, red light decreases inflammation and induces collagen remodeling.
Treating Inflammation with LED Light Therapy
Millions of Americans experience pain and reduced physical function from inflammation, especially chronic inflammation. This article gives an overview of inflammation: types, causes, symptoms, and treatments. Then we examine clinical research and the potential for treating chronic inflammation with red light therapy, a natural solution that doesn’t come with the distressing side effects of many anti-inflammatory drugs.
Natural red and near infrared light therapy is showing immense potential to be just that: a natural inflammation treatment without the pharma risks of traditional NSAIDs.
If you’re not familiar with red light therapy, the short version is this: light therapy delivers safe, concentrated wavelengths of natural light to your skin and cells. These red and near infrared wavelengths of light stimulate those cells and reduce oxidative stress, so your body is able to make more usable energy to power itself. This increases function, speeds healing, and lowers inflammation & pain, as demonstrated in numerous peer-reviewed studies.
Clinical research from around the world has found light therapy to be an effective treatment for reducing inflammation in specific surgical contexts as well:
- Post-surgery inflammation & pain relief: “is effective in decreasing pain intensity and post-surgery inflammation.” [
- Muscles, exercise, & soreness: Numerous other trials have analyzed red light therapy’s ability to treat muscle soreness and exercise-related inflammation and pain.
Health & Fitness Leaders Recommend Light Therapy for Inflammation
- The clinical results are very encouraging, demonstrating that natural light can play a major role in the treatment of inflammation and pain, without the dire side effects associated with NSAID medications.
- Individuals who struggle with joint pain and inflammation from fibromyalgia are great candidates for RLT.
- Individuals are often prevented from exercising properly because of inflammation and joint pain. Red light therapy is a game-changer for workouts and recovery, helping individuals overcome the strain and inflammatory pain of strenuous workouts.
Client Stories
Don was my very first “medical grade red light therapy“ client, who I stumbled upon by accident. He has been Suffering with a multitude of open wounds and MRSA for almost 3 years. Several dermatologist and MDs and many oral antibiotics, subcutaneous treatments, prescribed skin creams, etc. Nothing worked. The wounds and ulcers just would not heal.
This 77 year old man suffers from Afib. (Non-treated) He is not a diabetic and had no predisposition that should cause his skin to open up like this. He presented with over 50 open areas including 3 that were stage 3 ulcers on his mid right calf.
He had not being taking any oral medications and had not applied Medicated cream to any of the areas for over 3 months.
I asked him to try our medical grade red light therapy. He said he would try anything at this point. I set him up to receive 4-15 minute treatments for 4 days then off 3. Total treatments as of today are 14.
Here are his before and after pictures of his right leg from his knee to the top of his ankle.
He will continue treatment until these are healed or there’s no longer progress.
